Unbound Merino V-Neck T-Shirt

All-purpose merino tee for men and women.

Free to Be Me

I’ve been testing several merino-blend tops this summer, and while they were all quite soft, I was still surprised by how soft Unbound Merino’s V-Neck T-Shirt feels against my skin. The lightweight 100% merino fabric almost feels silky.

I’ve been wearing the Unbound Merino V-Neck T-Shirt for a few weeks, and more than once I have reflected on the “unbound” title because it feels like this tee can do anything, anywhere.

First I wore this top on my journey from Seattle to Sweden, via Germany and Denmark. It was an ugly combination of flights and trains over two and a half days, with an eight-hour layover in Frankfurt. I have never sweated so much during a flight. I ended up renting an hourly hotel at the airport for part of the day, hoping to sleep, and was happy to strip off the top and drop it into my bag. A few hours later, I had to get dressed again, and was amazed that the top was dry and did not smell. How was that possible? I’m well aware of wool’s natural odor fighting properties, but that was a long, sweaty flight. I smelled terrible, but Unbound Merino V-Neck T-Shirt was fine. Even after another flight, a train, and a taxi ride the next day, the shirt still smelled fine.

I washed it anyway because I felt like everything from the plane was gross, and I needed to feel like the germs were rinsed off. (I hand washed the top, and hung it on the line outside. Then I went for a two-hour hike; it’s was dry by the time I got back.) Then I proceeded to wear the top for five straight days. I wore it with long shorts when I rented a bike and pedaled to the sea for a swim. I wore it with gym shorts to do some yoga at my hotel. I wore it on a train and a bus when I traveled east to meet more of my family in another part of southern Sweden.

Then I wore the Unbound Merino V-Neck T-Shirt again. And again. For outdoor adventures, for dinners, for communing with trolls, for just hanging out, then for a ten-hour bus-train-train-bus-bus-bus journey that I really enjoyed despite the heat that day. The past week has been one of the most humid I can remember. I have been feeling like a crazy person because I can’t stop sweating—to the point that I’m slightly worried people are going to stop me on the street and tell me to go take another shower.

But the Unbound Merino V-Neck T-Shirt is fine. Better than fine. It looks great and smells brand new.

Simple Style

The Unbound Merino V-Neck T-shirt is made out of 100% merino wool. (The women’s V-Neck T-Shirt is made out of a wool/poly blend for greater durability). I like the lightweight material; it’s ideal for hot to cold weather, helping me cool down when it’s too hot and keeping me warm when the sun goes down.

I tested a men’s v-neck top because the women’s v-neck t-shirt wasn’t available in my size. I love the fit. It’s a bit loose, and I really love the extra length because I’m 6’ tall and have a crazy long torso. It has a nice, refined look. I feel comfortable wearing it traveling and in urban settings, but it can work hard, too, in outdoor activities.

I like the gentle v-neck, which is subtle but also a nice change from all the crew styles tees I wear. It’s also nice to have a v-neck that is quite modest. I tested a black tee because I like to keep it simple – everything in black or grey. The top works well with all my pants, shorts, and skirts. It has not been cool enough to wear warm top layers, but this tee will be my standard uniform with jeans and an hoody for fall temps.

I wore it under a rain shell the other day, and it did a great job of breathing and wicking.

Another feature I like about the Unbound Merino V-Neck T-shirt: no tags. All of the branding and size information is printed on the inside of the shirt. It’s a small thing, but I really notice it because I have so many tops with irritating tags.

My usual size is women’s XL (or men’s L), and I found a great fit in the men’s size L. I have quite a large chest, so sometimes men’s tees just feel more comfy to me.
