Speed Hound 28L Swim Buoy

neon yellow swim buoy bag with strap and phone case

This summer has been all about lake swimming for me. Using a Speed Hound Swim Buoy has made my water workouts safer and enhanced my swimming options.

A BIG BUOY

I’ve been testing Speed Hound’s 28L Swim Buoy for the past week. It’s quite a large bag compared to other swim buoys I’ve tested. I like using this large size when I spend hours in the water, when there are a lot of boats around (the more visible, the better), and when I need to stash several essential items into the buoy.

The buoy is simple to use. I just place my things (inhaler, keys, small towel, water bottle, granola bar) into the sack (including my phone inside the Phone Case that comes with the bag) roll the top of the bag down, then snap the ends together. The tight roll seals the bag so water can’t get in. Next, I inflate the buoy by blowing into the spigot, then twisting it closed.

The back of the bag has a hard plastic handle to which a flat nylon band is tied. That band attaches to the removable and adjustable waistband, which is also made out of a flat nylon band. It has the same snap-to-lock closure as the top of the bag.

The buoy also has D-rings on the top of the bag, so I can attach a shoulder strap if I want to carry it while walking or biking to the lake.

BIGGER=MORE VISIBLE

Before I enter the water I attach the bag to my waist. Then I find a not-too-busy part of the lake and swim back and forth until I feel it’s time to stop or my alarm sounds. I never feel the buoy, but I like knowing that boaters, other swimmers, and people on the shore can see me. I also like being able to keep important items with me. If I have trouble breathing, I don’t have to swim back to shore and hope that my bag with my inhaler is still there.

SWIMMING & HYDRATION

The 28L Speed Hound Swim Buoy’s large size makes it a useful workout tool. I can hold it under my chest or under my neck and use it like a kick board when I need a leg workout.

Today I was glad I had packed the buoy with a bottle of water because I ended up parched after staying in the lake for hours, pulling my little neighbors around on my gigantic floaty unicorn. I couldn’t leave them unattended (as if they would have let me stop), so I was glad I could just open my buoy and get my drink.

BOTTOM LINE

I love using swim buoys, and really appreciate the larger size of the Speed Hound 28L Swim Buoy. It’s so nice to have my things with me so I can stay in the water until I’m ready to get out, and being able to use the buoy as a kick board give my workout variety.
