Lightweight, durable hiking socks with lite cushioning.

Smartwool makes their Hike Lite Cushion Crew Socks in several styles. I tested two: one with a mountain range scene stitched into the top of the eight-inch high crew sock and another with contrasting colors formed designs around the bottom of the sock.

Both crew socks are eight inches tall and highly breathable, with near seamless toe boxes. The seams are so small and flat that I don’t feel anything against my toes. The Hike Lite Cushion Crew Socks are also mapped to the foot to provide specific performance features all around my foot. On top of my foot I can feel the grip that holds the sock in place. Underneath my foot (and wrapping around my heel and toes) is a thin layer of cushioning.

I’ve been wearing the Smartwool Hike Lite Cushion Crew Socks and Hike Lite Mountain Range Crew Sock for hour-long power walks, longer hikes, scrambling around rocky beaches, day trips, and as every day socks for a few weeks now. I love the fit. From toes to calf the socks stay in place and hug my foot and leg without feeling tight. The socks never slip down my leg, which is so nice. Not having to think about my socks is really the best thing I can say about them.

Both styles are ideal with lightweight hiking shoes and boots, and both do a good job of breathing and wicking. I’m used to wearing socks with a higher percentage of wool, but I really like the added durability of the recycled nylon fibers, not to mention the sustainability of using recycled materials.
