Soft, sustainable alpaca hoodie.

I almost can’t believe I ever wore sweatshirts. In fact, I lived in them. The heavier the cotton, the better. Then I discovered merino wool, and dropped cotton in a hot second. Now, there’s a new wool in town: alpaca.

Strong, Breathable

I’m not going to drop merino wool, but I’m very happy to welcome alpaca wool hoodies into my wardrobe, especially Paka’s Traceable Hoodie. It’s super soft, it’s warm, it breathes. It’s the perfect casual wear and outdoor top. It’s the first thing I want to put on after swimming in the lake and on any cool evening. I’m almost eager for summer to go by quickly so it will be cool enough to wear my Traceable Hoodie every day.

I like the larger weave fabric; it looks more like the wool sweaters I wore in the ’80s. I also like the loose style for comfort and for layering. I absolutely can’t get over the cozy softness of the 65% Royal Alpaca Fiber / 35% Recycled Nylon fabric. Whenever I wear the Traceable Hoodie I touch the sleeves constantly. It’s the softest sweater in my very large sweater/hoodie collection.

Like wool from sheep, alpaca wool is odor-resistant. It’s also lighter in weight than sheep wool and quite durable due to its high tensile strength. Alpaca wool has pockets that hold warm air, it breathes and wicks well (the fibers repel water), and it’s very, very soft. I’m completely sold. If it works for alpacas roaming in the Andes, it works for me.

The Natural Way

I also like Paka’s story and its sustainable practices. The alpaca fiber is sourced in Peru, they practice ethical shearing techniques, work with small farms, use natural dyes, and employ local women weavers. Every Traceable Hoodie can be traced to its origins and is hand signed by the person who made it. I appreciate Paka’s efforts to create high quality apparel and a business concerned with equality and sustainability.

Paka makes several garments in men’s, women’s, and unisex sizes. I texted a size XL, as size larger than I usually wear, and I love the loose fit.
