Eagle Creek’s latest convertible suitcase, the Tandem Warrior 22, takes the standard rolling carry-on suitcase to the next level.
This cleverly designed case features a zip-off bag that can be hauled separately as a shoulder bag or duffle, allowing me the luxury of having a suitcase for travel and an “every day” bag to use once I arrive at my destination.
In the standard configuration, items can be packed in the removable out bag, with the main compartment tucked away under a zipper. It has inner pouches for packing items I needed to access during travel and security checks, such as my document wallet and my 3-1-1 toiletries bag.
A pair of heavy-duty compression straps keep the whole package within required size parameters for carry-on luggage. The sturdy, twin-bar telescoping handle zips into its own compartment when not in use. When extended, it held my large, fully-loaded messenger bag without rolling or tipping. A shock-corded loop also stows in the handle’s pocket, providing a quick way to stash a jacket on the outside of the bag (the clip doubles as a bottle opener). The light-but-sturdy aluminum frame sports burly treaded wheels that jump curbs and conquer cobblestones with equal aplomb.
With the two bags zipped together, I could cram a few items into the lower compartment, but the Tandem Warrior really shined when I completely removed the duffle. Each bag now held 3-4 days’ worth of stuff, the same as a standard 22” suitcase. For trips where weight is a concern, the minimalist wheeled bag, which has a compression system but no pockets, weighs just over five pounds, while the feature-rich duffle comes in at a pound and a half. Noteworthy details: This travel system has generous bar-tacking, reinforced bottoms, and lockable zippers on the main compartments of both bags. The overall quality of the Tandem Warrior was impressive.
