The Duofold Men’s Varitherm Mid Weight Brushed Back Long Sleeve Crew is a performance layer for cold-weather activities. It’s comfortable, it fits well, and it’s been an ideal weight for keeping me cozy during outdoor adventures all winter long.
I first wore the Duofold Men’s Varitherm Mid Weight Brushed Back Long Sleeve Crew skiing on one of those bone chilling days that Jackson Hole is known for. While it was too cold for my car to start (-12 degrees F at 7am), it wasn’t too cold to go to Teton Village for a few tram laps. On top of my Duofold layer, I added a lined wind-blocking piece, a synthetic vest, and a puffy coat. I stayed a comfortable temperature while waiting in tramline, while skiing, and even in the 20 degree F sunshine above the inversion on top of Rendezvous Mountain’s summit. I was pleased with the warmth and the moisture wicking properties that it provided over the course of such a cold day, with varying levels of activity and temperatures.
Lately I been finding myself reaching for this Duofold layer out of my pile of old, well-used long underwear tops. I sometimes put my ski clothing on before my coffee, so I make this decision while still half asleep; I think it comes down to pure comfort. While the Duofold Men’s Varitherm Mid Weight Brushed Back Long Sleeve Crew is not as soft against the skin as fine merino wool, it is currently the softest shirt in my long john collection. The brushed interior of the fabric feels like a soft fleece. The jersey knit garment also fits my frame well; it has some stretch to it, and the seams don’t scratch my skin. For a mid-weight top, I find the shirt to feel light while I’m wearing it and yet still quite cozy and warm.
I’ve also worn my Duofold Men’s Varitherm Mid Weight Brushed Back Long Sleeve Crew on a trail run, skate skiing, and back country skiing in Bridger Teton National Park. The piece performs well in these various high-energy outdoor activities when it’s cold out (less than 20 degrees F – otherwise I choose a base layer weight top that’s thinner and a little more breathable), and is of good, durable quality for an affordable price.
