Blueseventy Thermal Socks Review

Lightweight, durable cold water swimming socks.

When I first started swimming in the lake near my house during COVID lockdown I didn’t think about what would happen when fall arrived. Then the lake became colder and colder until I had to figure out a plan to keep my hands and feet warm. Blueseventy’s Thermal Socks have been integral to that plan for several years.

Made out of thin 2mm neoprene and lined with a synthetic, orange, wool-like material called Zirconium, these warm socks are easy to slip on, nice and tall so I can tuck them under the ends of my wetsuit legs, and perfectly grippy around my leg. They’re also warm. I love them.

The socks are designed to lack buoyancy, so they don’t interfere with my kicking at all. They have one job, and that’s keeping my feet warm. I like the sleek style, and I wear them in fall and spring when the water is in the mid-50s to 60s F. In winter, when the water can get down to 45 F, I wear the Blueseventy Thermal Socks as a base layer underneath thick 5mm booties (which are clunky and baggy but keep my feet warm).

I’ve done a lot of trial and error over the past four years to learn which items work best for me and which items are most durable. For cold and very cold water swimming, I’ve been very happy with the protective benefits of wearing the Blueseventy Thermal Socks. The socks have a textured sole to protect the neoprene, but I advise wearing beach clogs until entering the water to prevent getting holes in the socks. I’ve been very careful with my socks, and have been wearing them for more than three years for three swims a week! I still wear my first pair, but as you can see in the photo, the top elastic band is starting to fall off.

Bottom Line

These slim thermal socks are ideal for training or competition. They’re lightweight, easy to pack, and will last a long time if you take care of them. (See our review of Blueseventy Thermal Gloves.)
