Here’s the thing about camping, tailgating, hiking, picnicking, going to the beach, and about everything else you can do outdoors: it’s better with a blanky! It’s also better if buying that blanky doesn’t break the bank.
Blanket on a Budget
The Sierra Designs Outdoor Quilt, part of SD’s outdoor collection designed for Target (where it’s called “Camp Quilt”), is a large, lightweight insulated blanket that’s just a few feet short of a full-size bedspread. That makes it big enough to wrap up in, share with someone, cover a picnic table, or designate your own personal space at an outdoor concert. It’s comfortable and cozy.
I like the bold maroon color with a vertical two-tone red stripe offset from one edge. Designy but also simple. The blanket is made out of polyester, with polyester filling.
Portable Comfort
I’m pretty frugal, so I’ve often used old sleeping bags and quilts on my outings. They worked just fine for activities near the parking lot but weren’t so portable when I had to carry them for any length of time. My tattered old cotton quilt was too heavy and bulky, and my old-school sleeping bag kept slipping out of the bungie cord I used to keep it rolled up. I much prefer having some real gear. The compact, super portable Outdoor Quilt Insulated Blanket packs into it’s own stuff sack. I can carry it by the drawstring or attach it to the outside of my pack.
Whenever I can, I travel by car or train, and it feels a bit luxurious to have my own blanket with me. I brought it along on my last road trip, thinking I’d use it at night when we sat out by the water. I ended up sleeping under it every night!
