When I first received my Ridgemont Outfitters Monty Lo hiking shoes, two things were quite apparent just by looking at them. They looked very comfortable but not very attractive. (I tested the women’s Monty Lo; the men’s Monty Lo comes in the bright colors you see in the photo, and in black.)
I started wearing them around the city while running errands and taking walks on city sidewalks, and found that the comfort level provided was less than what I was expecting. The sole is made of 100% high-density rubber; it cushions my foot well, but it doesn’t provide much arch support.
Once I started wearing then Ridgemont Outfitters Monty Lo hiking shoes on light hikes in the woods and on grassy terrain, they felt more comfortable. They’re fairly lightweight and keep my feet stable even though they don’t provide ankle support as a boot would. They have a solid heel stabilizer that helps hold my foot in place; this allows me to confidently walk or jog on uneven terrain.
Although true to size, the Ridgemont Outfitters Monty Lo hiking shoes are made for a slightly wider foot than mine (I have a narrow foot). However, with the right socks, my feet fit just fine without feeling like there was too much room. The easy lacing system, a mix of holes and loops, help me tie them securely and as snugly as I want them (the laces don’t rub or pinch the top of my foot thanks to the thick tongue). For some reason the shoes came with extra long shoe laces that would fit a pair of tall boots better than low hikers, so I just cut them shorter.
I like the front rubber toe protection because I’m a toe stubber. Even if I trip on a root while hiking in the woods, I know my toes are well protected. I can even walk through shallow puddles or wear them in the rain because they’re coated with a water repellent coating, so the suede panels are waterproof.
The only things I didn’t like about my Ridgemont Outfitters Monty Lo hiking shoes: the retro appearance and how they feel clunky when I walk on pavement. I know the company was trying to style them with an 80’s sort of look; they nailed it. However, it’s a look I’ve done before, so I’d prefer a slimmer profile shoe for casual wear. It’s ok. They’re not my “go to” shoe for running around town in my yoga pants, but I keep them at my cabin for light hiking.
Sizes: 4-1/2 to 10, also available in men’s 8-13.
Bottom Line: Comfortable, weather-proof light hiker for off-road hikes and walks.
