Orca Coolers’ Hydra Water Bottle

I have one key requirement for water bottles: they can’t leak! So far so good with Orca Coolers’ Hydra Water Bottle.

Totes Droppable

Made out of double-walled 18/8 food-grade stainless steel, this 22-ounce water bottle has been tossed into my swim back, dropped on several beaches, rattled around in my trunk, and lived in my rollator basket for weeks.

I am terrible at taking care of water bottles, so I prefer stainless steel bottles because they are durable. I also think the water tastes better. I usually have several bottles going at once: one in my house, one in my car, one in my swim bag, so I might grab a bottle and take a drink of day- or two-day-old water. It still tastes good.

Just the Right Size

The Hydra Water Bottle is the ideal size for me, too. I need more than 16 ounces for any outing, but carrying a 32 ounce bottle isn’t always comfortable. At 22 ounces, the Hydra is large enough for extra water and still fits into my shoulder sling bottle carrier, my daily pack, and my special outings tote.

The large mouth opening makes it easy to fill, clean, and cap the Hydra bottle. The silicone seal has held up well over weeks of use. But here is the thing: I have to make sure I securely tighten the small lid on the drinking spout. It sits inside a rubberized flap that is secured to the cap (so I don’t lose it). I made a big mistake once and didn’t check to make sure the spout cap was tight, and water leaked inside my swim bag. It looked like the cap sat on top of the flap, but it is actually inside it. So, other than my failure to securely seal the bottle, no leaks.

I love the whale tail shaped handle because it makes the bottle easy to grab. When I swim (in a wetsuit, in the lake, in winter), I need to rehydrate the minute I get out of the water. I like being able to both see and grab my Orca Hydra Water Bottle out of my duffel. Drinking out of a spout is so much better for me than trying to drink out of a wide-mouth bottle. I spill on myself all the time, so the spout helps me get the water into my mouth instead of spilling all over my chest. (The tail handle is also a mustache! When I get bored while fishing, I like to hold it up to my face and show my fishing buddy. He’s not really amused by it anymore, but I am.)

A Rainbow of Options

The stainless steel Orca Hydra Water bottle comes in powder-coated and glossy finishes. I tested a power-coated bottle and appreciate the bottle’s texture, which helps make it a bit more grippable. Surprise, I’m not great about cleaning things, either, so I appreciate that the bottle and lid can be put on the top basket of my dishwasher. I have a bottle brush for quick cleaning, but it’s nice to put the lid through the dishwasher every now and then.

Available in so many colors I stopped counting: Azure, Blaze Orange, Burnt Orange, Black, Charcoal, Crimson, Dandelion, Dark Maroon, Forest Green, Lime, Navy, OD Green, Orange, Powder Blue, Purple, Red, Tan, Violet. Also available in 32- and 66-ounce sizes. (Even more colors for the glossy finish bottles.)

Bottom Line

Easy to use, easy to clean, doesn’t leak, and a perfect medium-sized hydration bottle. Available in so many colors. A perfect gift item for any occasion.
