Mammut Washbag

I’m never quite sure how to pack toiletries when I’m traveling by train or car (and therefore, don’t have to pack them in a TSA approved clear bag), but Mammot has given me a few reasons to try a more organized approach.

Breathable by Design

Their tri-fold Washbag is similar in style to other toiletry kits I’ve used, with an important difference. This bag is more breathable. Mammut doesn’t seal the sides with a three-sided zipper but instead uses a simple strap and hook to hold the folded bag together. Inside, all but one storage pouches are made out of mesh. The open sides and mesh pouches allow air through the bag, which seems more hygienic than my old zippered bag

Secure Stowage

Like other bags of this fold-down style, the Washbag has a pull-out hook so I can easily hang it when I’m using it. The top zippered pocket is great for small items like tweezers, lip balm, and cotton swabs. The middle mesh pouches work much better than the elastic bands in my last bag for holding small bottles of shampoo and body wash. I just toss them in and the elastic at the top of each pouch is snug enough to keep the bottles secure.

I love the slim mesh toothbrush pouch because it allows my toothbrush to air dry. I also like the bottom zippered mesh pouch because it’s wide enough for my toothpaste and lotion. The Washbag also has a nylon strap handle that runs the length of the bag, making it easy to grab.

There’s one part of the bag I don’t like: the faux mirror with “the early bird catches the worm” printed underneath it. The barely reflective piece of metal just doesn’t cut it. I think Mammot should put a real mirror in the bag or leave it out entirely. As for the aphorism, it didn’t inspire me, but then again, I’m nocturnal.

Easy to Use, Quick to Pack

Bottom line: the mesh pouches and strap enclosure make the bag easy to use and quick to pack. I use Nalgene leakproof travel bottles, so I haven’t had any problems with leaks. That could be an issue for some users.

Available in two sizes, small and large. I tested the large bag.
