Hardworking, warm winter gloves.
The key to enjoying winter sports is having the right gear for the weather. I learned my lesson the hard way when I underestimated how cold it gets night fishing for squid a few months ago. Now I’m prepared with The North Face Summit Series Patrol GORE-TEX® SG Gloves.
Obviously, this glove is designed for snow sports, not fishing, but I had the chance to test them out anyway.
Right out of the box I noticed a few important features: there are several ways to make sure I don’t lose one or both gloves. They snap together, so they stay together when not in use. They can be fastened together with their respective Velcro flaps. They can be hooked together with a carabiner, using the thin nylon loops on each glove, and attached to a sleeve that has gloves snaps. And, they can be worn on my wrists with the handy wristbands. I absolutely love that I have all those options. I have used every single one of them!
The North Face Summit Series Patrol GORE-TEX® SG Gloves are made of goat leather and are lined with a 100% recycled super soft fleece-like material. They are insulated with Heatseeker™ Eco Pro, a lightweight synthetic insulation that has a high warmth-to-weight ratio and is designed to work even when wet. The insulation is made out of 85% recycled content.
I wore the gloves on several nights where temperatures were at freezing or below, and I also wore the gloves for a few soggy long urban hikes in pouring rain to test the warmth. On all occasions, my hands stayed warm and dry even when I got soaked. I think The North Face Summit Series Patrol GORE-TEX® SG Gloves were also quite breathable. I overheat no matter what I do, and I usually end up yanking off gloves after a few minutes of activity. I don’t think I ever removed these gloves during any use testing. I remember being warm, but I never got too warm.
The North Face Summit Series Patrol GORE-TEX® SG Gloves have a wide water-resistant nylon cuff that seals tightly with a wide Velcro strap. I was impressed with how easy it was to seal off the cold weather. These are seriously durable gloves, with extra leather panels over high-use areas (across palm and under the thumb), but they feel lightweight. The top sides of the thumbs are covered with suede, which I use often to wipe my nose.
The glove fingers are “precurved,” so there’s no break-in time and no finger fatigue. Pull them on, and get outside.
Bottom Line
Their light weight makes them very packable, their high function makes them my new favorite winter glove, and their durability means I’ll be wearing them for years.
