Backcountry Canoe Trip | Colorado and Utah

The big test of the North Face 62L Base Camp Voyager Duffel came recently on a three-week camping, padding, hiking and mountain biking trip to Fruita, CO and Moab, UT. 

We needed a lot of gear so space was at a premium in my 4Runner. The North Face 62L Base Camp Voyager Duffel held all of the clothes and electronics I needed for the trip without being so big that it might encourage overpacking. The removable divider in the middle of the bag helped me separate my paddling and biking clothes from my camping clothes. 

During this trip I slept in a roof tent and my brother slept in the back of the 4Runner, taking up all of our storage space. We left our bags outside at night, and I was happy to find out that even when there was some overnight rain, the North Face 62L Base Camp Voyager Duffel kept my gear dry. The duffel does not have taped seams so I wouldn’t use it in “dry bag” situations, but it holds its own in most outdoor situations. It also kept the copious dust out of my gear, which is pretty important after long days on the trail or river when I want to change into clean, dry clothes. The back pack style shoulder straps made for easy hauling in and out of camp, particularly at hike-in tent sites.

Scenario 2

Cabin Trip | Northern WI

This past winter I used the North Face 62L Base Camp Voyager Duffel to haul excess winter gear up to my cabin. It held my weekend gear, plus extra sweaters, a jacket, and some Nordic ski clothes. I really appreciated the end pocket that holds a pair of Nordic skiing or hiking boots so that my footwear doesn’t get items inside the duffel dirty. I use the smaller, left-side pocket for electronics and cords.  The small front pocket holds my every day carry items (wallet, keys, watch, phone, etc). 

As with the smaller North Face 42L Base Camp Voyager Duffel I tested earlier this year, the weatherproof finish on this bag fended off dog hair and drool from my 90 lb chocolate Lab who uses the duffel (and all my bags) as a bed on the long trips to the cabin.”

Materials & Construction

Material/Fabric: The North Face 62L Basecamp Voyager Duffel is built from waterproof, 300 denier, recycled, rip-stop polyester with a waterproof TPU laminate. The bottom of the duffel is reinforced with 840 denier recycled nylon with a DWR coating. Stitching and zippers are robust.

The bag has padded, stowaway shoulder straps, duffel handles, side handles, end pockets, internal mesh pockets, and stows into its own end pocket for storage.
