Field Testing
Scenario 1
Horseback Riding | 52°F, light breeze | Cle Elum, Washington

I wore the Stio Modis Hooded Jacket horseback riding this weekend, and even thought it didn’t rain, the jacket proved to be a smart choice. The temperature was mild, but the breeze made it feel cooler. Still, I tend to warm up fast once I start working with my horse. The pit zips and breathable construction kept me from overheating while grooming, tacking up, and riding.
One feature I appreciated immediately was the light stretch in the fabric, which made arm movement easy while reaching forward, lifting tack, and riding. Many rain shells can feel stiff or restrictive, but this one moved naturally with me.
The waterproof fabric also turned out to be surprisingly practical around a dusty, dirty barn environment. Dirt, dust, and even small mud splashes wiped right off the fabric. I used the interior zippered pocket for horse treats. The exterior zippered pocket kept my phone secure while riding.
Compared to other hard shells I’ve worn, the combination of stretch, breathability, and easy of cleaning after activity made this jacket feel more versatile for active use beyond just rain protection.
Scenario 2
Walking | 48°F, light rain | Seattle, Washington

The Stio Modis Hooded Jacket has become my first choice for daily walks during Seattle’s cool, grey, and often wet winter and spring.
Because it’s a shell, I layer it over a thin wool sweater or fleece, which makes it adaptable across a wide temperature range. I rarely carry an umbrella and often forget a hat, so the attached hood gets frequent use.
The Stio Modis Hooded Jacket’s adjustable hood cord helps cinch the hood securely when wind picks up; I often wear it even when it’s not raining simply because it adds warmth. The high collar does an excellent job of protecting my neck from wind and drizzle, and the adjustable cuffs let me fine-tune wrist openings depending on layering and temperature.
I also appreciate how breathable the jacket feels for walking. Some rain jackets feel clammy after even moderate activity, but this one manages moisture much better than many shells I’ve worn.
Scenario 3
Bike ride | 50°F, intermittent rain | Cle Elum, Washington

I wore the Stio Modis Hooded Jacket on a bike ride when the weather looked uncertain and I wanted protection in case I got caught in a squall.
The stretch fabric made it comfortable on the bike, especially with forward arm reach. Once I warmed up, I opened the pit zips to regulate heat. That made a noticeable difference. My back stayed drier and less sweaty than it does in less breathable rain jackets.
The waterproof fabric also performed well when road spray and mud splashes hit the back of the jacket. Water beaded immediately and rolled off rather than soaking in. Once home, cleanup was as simple as wiping the fabric with a damp cloth.
For active pursuits where breathability matters as much as weather protection, this jacket performed especially well.
So far, the fabric has shown no abrasion issues or wear points, and the materials feel well-made. Based on construction and performance, I’d expect good longevity with normal use.
Fit
| Too small | Slightly small | Fits well | Slightly big | Too big |
I’d describe the fit as trim/athletic but not restrictive, with enough room for a thin middle layer underneath. The stretch fabric helps the jacket move well despite the streamlined fit. Sleeve length and torso length both worked well for my frame.
One fit note: because the hand pockets sit higher on the torso, items stored there can make the chest area feel slightly more snug.

Materials & Construction
Material/Fabric: The Stio Modis Hooded Jacket is made out of a 100% recycled polyester 2.5 layer fabric that is waterproof, breathable, and noticeably softer and more flexible than many traditional rain shells. Sealed seams.
Sustainability Creds: Contains recycled materials, eco-friendly materials
Bottom Line
The Stio Modis Hooded Jacket has become my “go to” shell for wet or uncertain weather from the mid-40s to low 60s.
What makes this jacket stand out for me is that it doesn’t feel like a typical crinkly, stiff rain shell. The stretch, breathability, pit zips, and practical weather protection make it comfortable enough for active use, while the clean styling makes it equally good for everyday wear.
I’d recommend it to anyone who wants a versatile shell that performs well during movement and doesn’t overheat like many waterproof jackets can.
