Function, stylish outdoor pants.
I think I’ve found the ideal pant to wear for a vacation that might include canoeing in mosquito infested waters by day and going out for a nice meal at night: the Royal Robbins Wilder Pant.
Made out of a tightly woven nylon fabric that’s both wind- and water-resistant, this straight-legged pant has double layering at the knees and a UPF 40 sun rating. Its durable fabric also protects against bug bites without using toxic chemicals.
Even better, Royal Robbins took the time and effort to tailor the pants with enough room and stretch to make them extremely functional (think yoga pant level of stretch) but also with enough tapering in the overall length to make them look good. The Royal Robbins Wilder Pant’s recycled nylon material stretches laterally to avoid binding at seat, thigh, and knees. The pant also features an elastic cuff cinch, two deep slant front pockets, two back pockets, and a secure zippered pocket located on the right leg’s lateral seam that holds a credit card and keys, or a phone, without making my right leg look like it’s grown a burl.

I tested a size 38 long Wilder Pant, and it felt true to size, with plenty of give that allowed me to comfortably make my way over boulders and logs. After several hikes through rough scrub brush, I didn’t notice any, scuffs, tears, or noticeable wear. I thought the cuff cinch worked well for pulling the pants up to my knees when crossing streams. I found the pant ideal for hiking on ridge lines in cooler temperatures, where being exposed to wind while wearing shorts would be a little chilly.
The Royal Robbins Wilder Pants pant would also make an excellent ski touring pant over a base layer for some light backcountry or track skiing.
