Who is This For

  • Snowshoers, spring skiers, and winter hikers
  • Anyone looking for a stylish winter jacket for city wear
  • Anyone wanting a lightweight jacket that still provides good warmth

This may not be the best jacket for extreme cold or for deep winter alpine conditions (where a heavier expedition-style jacket would be needed) or for high-energy activities where breathability is paramount.

Field Testing

Scenario 1

Snowshoeing | 34°F | Cle Elum, WA

After two feet of fresh snow fell overnight at my cabin near Cle Elum, I headed out the next day for a snowshoeing session wearing my Topo Designs Townie Puffer Jacket with just a wool base layer underneath.

Right away I noticed how well the jacket balanced warmth and breathability. The insulation kept me comfortably warm when I first stepped outside, but as my body temperature increased during the hike I was able to regulate heat by unzipping the lower section of the two-way zipper. This feature turned out to be incredibly useful since insulation jackets are generally not very breathable.

I also noticed that the insulation in the Topo Designs Townie Puffer Jacket holds warmth well when I stop moving but releases heat quickly when vented with the two-way zipper, making it especially useful for activities where my body temperature fluctuates. None of my other insulated jackets have a two-way zipper, and it makes a big difference.

The Topo Designs Townie Puffer Jacket also has excellent pocket storage. With three exterior pockets and two interior pockets, I didn’t need to carry a pack for my one-hour snowshoe outing. I was able to carry my phone, lip balm, tissues, and keys comfortably in the pockets.

On my way home I found a pair of elk antlers buried in the snow and carried them back home. They left a little dirt and debris on the jacket, but once everything dried I wiped the fabric clean with warm water and a cloth.

Scenario 2

Spring Skiing | 32°F | Snoqualmie Pass, WA

I’ve also been wearing my Topo Designs Townie Puffer Jacket while skiing at Snoqualmie Pass, and it works surprisingly well as a lightweight spring ski jacket. With a wool base layer underneath, the jacket keeps me plenty warm while skiing. The high collar design does a great job protecting my neck from wind on the chairlift, which is something I really appreciate on breezy days.

The two-way zipper proved useful here as well. When sitting on the chairlift, I can unzip the bottom slightly so the jacket doesn’t bunch up. After a run I can open it a bit for extra ventilation if I’m feeling too warm.

The pocket layout also works well for skiing. I keep my ski pass in the chest pocket, where it’s easily detected by the lift entry gates. The other pockets hold lip balm, tissues, my phone, and my car key fob.

The zipper pulls are large and easy to grab, even while wearing ski gloves. After wearing the Topo Designs Townie Puffer Jacket in snowy conditions for several weeks, I’ve found it to be impressively warm while still remaining lightweight, and it allows a comfortable range of motion.

Scenario 3

Cool Weather Urban Walks | 43°F | Seattle, WA

The Topo Designs Townie Puffer Jacket has also become one of my favorite jackets for winter walks around Seattle. The Huckleberry color (a dark burgundy tone) is especially attractive and stands out from typical winter jacket colors while still being versatile enough for everyday wear.

It keeps me warm without feeling bulky, making it ideal for longer city walks or running errands. The jacket has a clean, streamlined look, so it works well in a city setting while still performing as an outdoor jacket.

The high collar provides excellent warmth around my neck so I don’t need a scarf, and the insulated hood is effective at keeping my head warm when the weather turns windy or drizzly. The hood fits snugly around my face, helping block out cold air.

The pockets are especially useful for everyday items I need. My larger smartphone fits easily in the front pockets, while the chest pocket works perfectly for quick-access items like lip balm or tissues. The two interior pockets can hold several smaller items securely.

If I walk into a store or sit down for a break, I can unzip the lower portion of the two-way zipper to release heat and stay comfortable. For city use, the Topo Designs Townie Puffer Jacket offers a great combination of warmth, mobility, and everyday functionality.

So far the jacket has handled snow, dirt, and everyday wear well. Cleaning has been simple; I just wipe down the exterior when needed. Based on the construction and materials, I expect the Topo Designs Townie Puffer Jacket to hold up well for several seasons of winter use.

Scenario 4

Travel, touring | 35-55°F, mostly dry, sometimes windy| Krakow, Prague, Český Krumlov, Vienna

When I started packing for my three-week trip to Europe, I had to make a hard decision. Do I bring one of my super puffy down coats, or do I bring my lighter weight Topo Design Townie Puffer jacket? I opted for the Townie Puffer Jacket, and I’m so glad I did! It’s so much more versatile and packable than my bulky ski coat, and it performed well even when the temperatures reached 50°F.

I basically lived in my Topo Designs Townie Puffer Jacket. The first half of our trip was very cold, with temperatures dipping into the upper 30’s at night. I wore a thick wool shirt under my jacket and put the hood up to help keep the heat in. The jacket kept me warm and comfortable while strolling around after dinner on those colder evenings.

When the temps warmed up into the 40’s, the breeze made it feel much colder. There were days when the sun would come out for awhile, only to disappear later. I often forgot to wear gloves and a hat, so I was happy to use the hood as needed, as well as the warmer pockets, on many cold outings. The Topo Designs Townie Puffer Jacket’s high collar provided warmth and weather protection. On the days when temperatures reached the mid 50’s, I wore the jacket either unzipped completely or unzipped at the waist to let a little heat out.

My Townie Puffer jacket is a nice burgundy color and looked great with my mostly grey and black outfits. It’s been ideal for this trip: lightweight yet warm, functional for a variety of outings, and compressible for packing.

Fit

The jacket has a “regular” fit that allows room for a wool base layer or light sweater underneath without feeling tight or restrictive.

One thing I like about the fit is that it allows full freedom of movement, which is helpful during activities like snowshoeing and skiing. At the same time, it still maintains a flattering, streamlined shape for everyday wear. The sleeve length and overall jacket length felt just right for me, providing good coverage without feeling oversized.
