Wigwam Ice Sock : Wooly Warmth
Of the eight pairs of socks I could have tested yesterday for the first day of backcountry skiing, I chose Wigwam's Ice Sock. As its name implies, it's built for the cold. While the rest my companions finished the day with frozen toes, mine were warm and comfortable. I'm going to keep choosing my Wigwam Ice Socks for all cold weather endeavors this winter - ice climbing, snowshoeing, and epic ski days. They're spun from wool and nylon, the former material comprising 85 percent of the sock. With so much wool, Wigwam's Ice Socks stay warm when wet and don't smell bad after continuous use in the backcountry. The wool blend is really the perfect material for hardcore winter use - far better than my old polypro socks. Many socks I test are super technical; they've got more cushion in part of the foot, less cushion in another part, and so on. The ice sock is made of the same material and of the same thickness throughout. For cold weather use, especially in a snowboard boot, I like that. My boots have some pressure points in them, but the thick cushion in the Ice Sock makes them go away. All in all, Wigwam's Ice Sock is a winter essential for me. It's a unisex model that will fit women (size 6 to 13) and men (size 5 to 15). It's available in brown and grey, from size M to XL. Bottom Line: One of the warmest socks I've worn -- and it's soft and cushiony too. (N.W., Dec 10). BUY ONLINE: $14, $11.99 at BobWard.com.
