Vasque M-Possible Moutaineering Boot : The Peak of Excellence

When I first saw these lightweight, hardcore alpine boots, I wanted them for myself. They come with their own ankle gaitors, and they utilize the ultra cool BOA lacing system. What more could a mountaineer want?

Well, since I'm not a mountaineer, merely a day hiker, I asked my friend Matt Fioretti, a professional guide and the owner of Four Winds Himalayan Guide Service, to put them through the paces. Here's what he has to say about them:

I have been wearing the Vasque M-Possible boot for about three months now. It's very comfortable and was easy to break in. It's a fantastic boot for me because it performs well in diverse situations. I've worn my M's on long hikes, technical mixed climbs, and on water ice.

For me at altitude in the Himalayas weight is a big issue. These boots are very light, yet still have enough insulation to keep my feet warm and dry. I love the lacing system -- all I have to do is turn a dial that tightens the boot uniformly around my foot. Sweet. Tying laces at altitude is a huge undertaking. The BOA system saves me time, hassle, and keeps my boot securely wrapped around my foot.

The lugged sole has some give like a running shoe so descending is much more comfortable than the hard pounding that I feel in my other boots. On steep ground the light weight and slim cut offer precise control over my crampon placement.

I've tested my M's on the West Arete of Eldorado Peak (WA), which had all the mediums in early season--rock, ice, snow. I found them to be excellent in all cases. All in all, I give these boots an A+.
