The Snowshoe Experience : Get Out and Do It

Many years ago and friend and I went snowshoeing in Minnnesota's north woods at three o'clock in the morning. I recall that a large quantity of wine had something to do with the late hour of our adventure, but then again, had I not over-served myself I might not have seen how beautiful winter woods can be when illuminated by moonlight. (I'm older now and do not recommend mixing alcohol with winter sports!!)

Now that I live in Seattle, snowshoeing is a different business. For one thing, I have to drive to the mountains to find deep snow. For another, I have to think about avalanche safety and other concerns. So, I picked up a copy of Claire Walter's book, The Snowshoe Experience.

For anyone new to snowshoeing, or new to mountain snowshoeing, this book provides a good basic outline of how to get started, with information on gear, safety tips, trail etiquette, and more. Most important, The Snowshoe Experience tells readers how to dress and prepare for a snowshoe outing.

If you've never snowshoed before, it's worth checking out. You'll blast a lot of calories, and you'll get to see parts of the outdoors you wouldn't normally see in winter.

Bottom Line: Snowshoeing is an inexpensive winter sport that the whole family can enjoy.--E.D. (Mar 06)
