Columbia Men's Exploratory Sweater : Outdoors Uptown
I've received many compliments on my Columbia Exploratory Sweater, and I'm not surprised. Columbia's done a nice job on the design of this merino wool quarter-zip sweater. I like the fine knit and the way the sleeves taper. The ends of the sleeves feel smooth and don't bunch up because there's no cuff, which makes the sweater look more refined. Same goes for the hem - the top hangs like a t-shirt, which is so much nicer than having a wide band of ribbing around my waist. (Read: it doesn't make me look fat.) The Exploratory Sweater is sleeker than a traditional sweater but just as warm. It breathes well--that's what wool does--and it's machine washable (bonus). I like the zippered neck because I can zip or unzip depending on my temperature. I've been wearing it as a mid layer over a button-down shirt for dinner parties, to work, and for insulation under a rain shell when I'm outside. I like the small, flat pocket on the left sleeve. What I like most about this top is that I get the warmth I need without bulk. I also get a sweater that isn't too sporty or outdoorsy looking; I wear it around town almost every day. I have noticed that the underside of the collar can sometimes feel a bit scratchy (something I haven't felt with other, more expensive merino tops), which isn't a problem when I wear it with a button-down shirt. All in all, I've enjoyed wearing this top. It's warm and it's attractive. Available in men's sizes S-XXL in Black Heather or Breen Heather. Bottom Line: An ideal mid weight, mid-layer piece when you want to look good and stay warm. --B.M. (Dec '10) BUY ONLINE : $110,
